Eg ser på det som min jobb å prøva å gjera mitt for å gjera båten til ein heim-vekke-frå-heimen for dei som arbeider ombord. Eg vil gjerne gjere det heimkosleg, slik at dei som arbeider ombord skal trivast.

Dåpen på Skandi Vega er i dag, men båten var fortsatt ikkje heilt ferdig når eg var ombord i går for å montere bileta. Det vil derfor ikkje vera alle fotografiene her som er heilt optimale av den grunn.

Her er bileta som er i messa, alle 60×90 cm med mindre det står noko anna spesifisert.

Ja, bortsett fra denne som er 60×80 cm.

Rett ved sida av messa er opphaldsrommet, eller loungen. Her er bileta som heng der. I dei små fotografia som er her på nettsida er det mange detaljar i bileta som forsvinn. Ofte er det heile små historiar inne i eit bilete.

Rett over gangen er røykerommet:

Dette er eit bilete av Haakonshallen i Bergen, bygd på 1200-talet om eg ikkje huskar feil.

Så flyttar me oss oppover til D-dekket. Her er konferanse-rommet:

“Den velkjente løyndomen bak den stengte døra” er  80×100 cm.

I samband med konferanserommet. ligg ei stove, med masse lys som kjem inn frå store vindauge.

Her er bilete somheng i lugaren til Kapteinen. Og min kjære pappa som alltid er hjelpsom i arbeidet med å få bileta montert ombord.

Den gamle båtmakarenpå bilete traff eg på Austevoll for nokre år sidan. Han hadde bygd trebåtar heile livet.

Nok ein gong er eg den heldige som har fått lov å utsmykke DOF´s flotte skip. Her er ein presentasjon av utsmykkinga, og nokre av tankane bak den.

I messa har eg laga tre Kjærleiks-skjold. Eller livs-skjold. Inspirert av afrikanske stammers krigs-skjold, men med motsatt intensjon. Dei er laga for å beskytta eigaren med fred, gjennom å læra, å leva og å elska.

Ein del av det å leva er å vera open for det som livet gir deg. Ei livslang læringsprosess gjennom å bruka sansane dine og tanken din.

Livet er vårt felles unike eventyr. Så vidt me veit, lever me berre ein gong, så me kan velga å gjera mest mogleg ut av det me har. Og då tenker eg ikkje på å klatre Himalaya, men å vera vaken og aktivt tilstades i eins eige liv, og å skapa eigen sjebne.

Kjærleik er det enklast og det vanskelegaste. Det mest vedunderlege av alle primær-behov.

Alle skjolda er laga av oksydert kopar og messing.

I samme etasje er det fire opphaldsrom, inkludert eit bibliotek. Favoritt-sitatet mitt av Shakespear er no for alltid etsa  i kopar og messing:

Eitt anna emne eg har jobba med ombord i denne båten er lys.

I desse to fyrste bileta, har eg jobba med fyrlykter, og kor viktig insats dei har gjort for å halda sjøfolk trygge. Sjølv i dag, når skipsfarten er modernisert og elektronifisert, kan ein setja pris på viktigheten av desse husa.

Både fyrtårn-bileta over og det nedanfor er foto-collagar. Ser du familie-portrettet i det øverste? I tenker at det er ein fyr-vokter familie. Originalen er to meter lang, så det er mange detaljar her, som du ikkje kan sjå i denne vesle varianten.

Alle desse turkise bileta er akryl malt lag-på-lag på akvarell-papir, i collage med diverse funne objekt. Nokre av orda er oksydert i kopar eller messing.

Han blir oppfordra til å “synge ut”. Men det er kanskje ikkje nødvendig?

Eidesvik Offshore wanted to repaint their reception, and asked me if I could make something for two of the walls. So here is one of them, the other one is still in my head. I usually install the art myself, but since I was away, the pictures went straight from the printers to the framers to the new owner. The top two ones are actually reprints. I never do that, but this is the company who owns the originals, and together we thought it would be nice. The children you can see vaguely in the background are the two previous owners of the shipping company. Father and son, Lauritz and Simon. They are both dead now, but have done a tremendous job in building the company and a community around it. Securing the people in Langevåg not only jobs, but a lot of extra benefits as well. A couple of years ago, they built a huge culture-house for the community, just so people would like living there better. I have a huge respect for them, and of course the people who run the company now. They have a policy of supporting their local community, and this has given me the chance to develop as an artist. They have given me decoration-jobs for over a decade now. Something I am truly grateful for.

The bottom picture I made new, to complete the story. The piece is actually called “Vision”, and is partly inspired from a traditional Norwegian folk-song. About how a man looks out over the rocky shores, and “sees” that he can have a future her, decides to build his home (company) here. Slowly and steadily, building, one rock on top of the other, until one day he not only reaches his vision, but gets so much more. So the bottom picture is of course the rocky shore, the top left is first generation, top right is second generation with two rock-towers, even taller than in the left/first generation. It´s a very symbolic piece, and I think it´s easier to understand if you know the song. 

Oh, and the rock-towers are stacked “live”, not in photoshop I have a good friend I went to teachers college with, who has this boulder-beach not far from her house, and some Sundays, she goes to the beach, and makes these little pieces of everyday-art, and leave them for others to enjoy.

It will be about 100 x 75 cm, all in duppion silk. Applique and machine-embroidery, and a  fabric-paint stamped pattern. Here are the colors I can play around with:

The stamp I made in two sizes, out of fun-foam, was based on a piece of decor I found on the old alter in Norway´s (probably) oldest stone-church (ca. 1030 A.D.) Which by chance happens to be in Moster, my neighbouring “town” (and also where the school is,  who wants the new banner). Anyway. So far I have decorated two of the fabrics, and cut out the silhouette of the volcanic mountain on the island (Siggjo), and part of the scenery from Moster.

Below is rough draft, just by placing the cut fabric in place.

And here is a picture of the text I´m printing. It´s also a copy from the old church, this time from the old bell that now is stacked away in the attic. It says:

AVE.MARIAGRACIAPLENADOMINVSTCVM

and is an old catholic prayer. Spelled the old way too, apparently. 

The three pictures below are actually one and the same. Amazing how the light “colors” the fabric.

I should really be done with this by Friday, so I need to get started on the embroidery tomorrow. Stay tuned!

Below you can see the process, as I am make a stamp inspired by a decoration on an old alter in an even older church. Here is part of the alter:

Make a photo-copy of the image you want to make a stamp of. Draw with a soft pencil around the edges. Turn the copy, place it on the fun-foam (mose-gummi) and rub hard against the back of the paper. This should transfer the pencil-line unto the fun-foam, so you can see where you want to cut.

Oh, yeah, the best option for fun-foam is the 9 mm. It is thicker than the ones you´ll find in the play-section, and while it is more of a job to cut it, you reduce the risk of spilling paint where it shouldn´t be. 

Use a sharp knife, and by all means, a hard surface underneath the foam. Hardwood or a hard-plastic. Something you´re not afraid of getting marks in. Also, when cutting in thick foam, try cutting only half-way down first in the fine detailed areas. This will make it easier to get the lines nice. 

When you´re done, glue it onto another piece of fun-foam with a strong glue. I use a special shoe-glue (!), but I am sure other types of strong glue will work too. 

And then, I am ready to give it a try. This time on fabric.

For Eidesviks supplyship I have been working in a new technique. I have printed the motives on wood, and then partly painted over it again. The structure in the wood still shines through, and gives it a dreamy feel. 

Nedanfor er to av bileta som skal pryde messa ombord. Dei er begge i bearbeidd foto, trykt på lerret. Prosjektledaren ville at tema for alle bileta ombord skulle vera “familie”, og eg har difor konsentrert meg om portrett i dette prosjektet. Portrett av folk i ulike aldrar. Eg er veldig fornøyd med resultatet sjølv. Bileta i messa utstråler ein sakral ro, og bileta trykt på tre som skal i lugarane er drøymande. 

Below are two of the pictures adorning the mess onboard. Both are photoshoped photos printed on canvas. Since the project-manager of the ship wanted the theme for all the pictures to be “Family”, I have concentrated on portraits on this project. Portraits of people of different ages. And I am very pleased with the result, if I have to say so myself. The pictures in the mess express an almost sacred calmness, while the cabin-pictures printed on wood are dreamy.

I just came home from delivering pictures to Skandi Arctic, the sister-ship of Skandi Achiever. In other words, a BIG boat!  Usually I only use my own photos, but as you can see, this time there are several vintage photografs from Nansens expedition to the North pole with the ship Fram. All the vintage pictures are mixed with my own new photos.
